Day 1 :

Shimla to Sangla Valley (190 km / 8 hrs)

Morning, you need to report in Shimla at 9:00 AM. After a short tea break, we begin our drive toward Sangla Valley. The journey takes you through beautiful mountain roads, apple orchards, and scenic Himalayan landscapes as we move deeper into Kinnaur.

Sangla Valley is known for its serene environment, rich forests of maple, oak, pine, and its charming villages. Upon reaching Sangla or Rakcham, you can relax and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the valley.

Overnight stay in Sangla Valley/Rakcham.

Day 2 :

Sangla Valley - Chitkul - Kalpa (75 km / 2–3 hrs)

After breakfast, we will head towards Chitkul, the last inhabited village near the Indo-Tibetan border. We will visit the Chitkul Bridge and the famous Mathi Temple, followed by lunch at the iconic “Hindustan ka Akhri Dhaba.”

After exploring the beautiful landscapes and unique culture of Chitkul, located at an altitude of 3,450 meters—we will depart for Kalpa. By evening, we will reach Kalpa, located above the majestic Kinner Kailash mountain range.

Day 3 :

Kalpa - Nako Lake - Geyu Mummy - Tabo (175 km / 7 hrs)

Morning after breakfast we will proceed to Tabo village. We will cross the Khab (Convergence of Spiti and the Satluj Rivers) through Hindustan Tibet Highway. You will witness the Leo Purygal Peak from the Khab Bridge. In the afternoon, after your lunch at Nako village, we will get into the Spiti Valley by way of Sumdo.

Now to see something interesting we will move towards the Geyu Village to see the 500 year old Mummy and travellers enjoy this place a lot. In the evening we will reach Tabo village. There will be a homestay and it's a great chance to talk to the people and have delicious homemade food in Spiti.

Day 4 :

Tabo → Dhankar → Kaza (90 km / 3-4 hrs)

In the morning, we will visit the ancient Tabo Monastery, also known as the “Ajanta of Himachal Pradesh” due to its beautifully preserved centuries-old paintings, murals, and sculptures.

After exploring Tabo, we will continue to Dhankar Village, the former capital of Spiti Valley. Here, you can visit the historic Dhankar Monastery, dramatically built on a high cliff overlooking the confluence of the Spiti and Pin Rivers.

By evening, we will reach Kaza, the headquarters of Spiti Valley. Kaza is known for its vibrant local market, monasteries, cafés, and stunning views of the rugged Spiti landscape. It serves as the cultural and administrative hub of the region, giving you a perfect blend of traditional Spitian life and modern-day conveniences.

Day 5 :

Kaza - Hikkim - Komik - Langza - Kaza (75 km / 3–4 hrs)

Today is a full day of exploring the high-altitude villages around Kaza. After breakfast, we will begin our journey toward Hikkim Village, home to the World’s Highest Post Office and the World’s Highest Polling Station. You can even mail a postcard to yourself as a memorable keepsake from Spiti.

From Hikkim, we continue to Komik Village, one of the world’s highest motorable villages at an altitude of 15,027 ft. Here, you can visit the ancient Tangyud Monastery, known for its unique fortress-style architecture with slanted mud walls and traditional design.

Next, we head to Langza, famous for its iconic giant Buddha Statue overlooking the village and dramatic Himalayan landscape. Langza is also known for its rich fossil fields, offering a glimpse into Spiti’s prehistoric past.

By evening, we will return to Kaza for an overnight stay.

Day 6 :

Kaza - Key Monastery - Chicham Bridge - Kaza (52 km / 2–3 hrs)

After breakfast, we will begin the day by visiting the iconic Key Monastery, the largest and most famous monastery in Spiti Valley. Perched on a hilltop, this century-old monastery offers breathtaking panoramic views and is home to ancient murals, scriptures, and a peaceful monastic lifestyle.

After exploring Key Monastery, we will continue towards the spectacular Chicham Bridge. Known as the highest bridge in Asia, it took nearly 15 years to construct and opened to the public in 2017. The deep gorge beneath the bridge and the dramatic landscape around it make this one of the most thrilling spots in Spiti.

After spending time at Chicham Bridge, we will return to Kaza. The rest of the day is free for leisure, you can relax at a café, explore the local market, or enjoy the peaceful surroundings of the town.

Day 7 :

Kaza - Kalpa (197 km / approx. 8–9 hours)

Today, we begin our journey from Kaza back to Kalpa, a scenic drive of around 8–9 hours. As we travel through the dramatic Spiti landscapes, you will witness stunning valleys, rugged mountains, and beautiful views throughout the route.

We will stop for lunch on the way, enjoying the peaceful surroundings and natural beauty of Himachal Pradesh. By late afternoon or early evening, we will arrive in Kalpa, a quiet village famous for its apple orchards and breathtaking views of the Kinner Kailash peaks.

Upon arrival, relax, enjoy dinner, and spend the night in Kalpa.

Day 08 :

Kalpa - Shimla (222 km / approx. 8 hours)

On the final day of our journey, we begin the morning with refreshing views of Kalpa’s beautiful apple orchards. If you wish, you can purchase fresh apples or local produce before we start our return drive towards Shimla.

The scenic drive will take around 8 hours, passing through charming villages, forests, and winding mountain roads. You will reach Shimla by around 6 PM, marking the end of your memorable Spiti Valley tour.

How to Reach Spiti Valley?

Spiti Valley in Himachal Pradesh can be reached through two major routes, one from Shimla and the other from Manali.

1. Shimla Route (Open All Year Round)

This is the most reliable and accessible route, open throughout the year (except during rare heavy snowfall).

Route Map: Shimla → Narkanda → Rampur → Powari → Spillow → Khab Bridge → Nako → Chango → Sumdo → Tabo → Kaza

Spiti Valley officially begins after Sumdo. This route is ideal for winter travel.

2. Manali Route (Open June to Early October)

This route remains open only during summer.

Route Map: Manali → Atal Tunnel → Gramphu → Chhatru → Chota Dhara → Batal → Kunzum Pass → Losar → Kaza

This route is shorter but much rougher and often blocked by snowfall. It’s recommended only for experienced drivers or travellers visiting in peak summer.

How Many Days Are Needed for a Spiti Valley Road Trip?

If you are starting from Delhi or Chandigarh, a minimum of 8–10 days is recommended to truly experience the mystical beauty of Spiti Valley.

Travel Time: It usually takes 2–4 days to reach Spiti and return, depending on the route you choose.
Exploration Time: The remaining days can be dedicated to exploring Spiti’s dramatic landscapes, high-altitude villages, monasteries, and unique culture.

With this schedule, you can enjoy the serene valleys, rugged mountains, and the unique charm of Spiti without feeling rushed.

What clothes should I carry on a Spiti Valley trip?

You should choose your wardrobe depending on when you’re visiting Spiti. The staple items that you’ll need all year round are:

Thermal inners and a light fleece jacket
Socks, gloves, and a monkey cap or balaclava – all woolen or fleece material
Proper shoes with enough insulation for comfortable long journeys
Hat, sunglasses, sun protection cream and lotion

Apart from these, choose clothes that can be worn in layers so that they can be removed or added depending on temperature. Light woolens will suffice between June-August. But March-June or September-November will require heavy woolens. Although if you’re travelling in winter between December-April, you need to pack very carefully to protect yourself against the merciless cold and winds.

Are there ATMS in Spiti Valley?

Being at such high altitudes, ATMs in Spiti are not frequent and mostly non-functioning. Places like Kaza, Tabo, Sangla, and Kalpa have ATMs, they’re likely to be out of cash or disfunctional. It is best to withdraw cash from Shimla or Manali itself as cashflow in ATMs is very stable, or Reckong Peo which has 6-7 ATMs

What permits are needed to visit Spiti Valley?

Permits are generally required for foreign nationals visiting Spiti. A Protected Area Permit(PAP) can be obtained from Shimla or Kaza depending on the route you’re taking. For Indian nationals, a government identity proof like passport/voter ID/Aadhar is enough. All permit fees are included in your Spiti Valley package so that you can enjoy a hassle-free trip.

What are the network services available in Spiti Valley?

Spiti Valley is a remote high-altitude region, but most areas do have network coverage. Here’s what you need to know:

BSNL, Airtel, and Jio are available in almost all major villages and towns, including Kaza, Tabo, Dhankar, Kibber, Key Monastery, Hikkim, Komik, Langza, and more. (The only notable exception is Chandratal Lake, where mobile network coverage is virtually unavailable)

What is a Homestay accommodation mean?

Homestays are perfectly suited for the phrase ‘home away from home. Homestays are where you can stay with the local family and live with them, experience their culture and practices, share meals with them, help them with their regular activities.
In Spiti Valley, Homestays are very primarily made up of mud. Mostly people eat vegetarian food, meat is not accessible in this region. There are eco-friendly toilet facilities in the homes. There is bedding for you to keep you warm during the night.

In simple words guests at the Homestays are accommodated in the family house that will provide you with the basic but tasty food.

What should we do to avoid high altitude sickness?

Spiti Valley is located at high altitudes, so it’s important to take precautions to avoid altitude sickness.

Tips for Acclimatization and Safety:

Take it Slow: Avoid rushing into physical activities on arrival. Give your body time to acclimatize to the altitude.
Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to help your body adjust and prevent dehydration.
Eat Light and Nutritious Meals: Heavy meals can make acclimatization harder. Focus on carbohydrates and easily digestible foods.
Avoid Alcohol and Smoking: Both can worsen the effects of altitude sickness.
Rest Adequately: Sleep well and avoid overexertion during the first 24–48 hours.
Medications (Optional): Some travelers use prophylactic medicines like Diamox (Acetazolamide) after consulting a doctor.
Know the Symptoms: Headache, nausea, dizziness, and shortness of breath are common signs. If symptoms worsen, descend to a lower altitude immediately.
