This is the day our trip to Spiti Valley from Chandigarh Airport starts. From Chandigarh we reach Shimla, the favourite hill station of most Indians, formerly known as the summer capital of British-ruled India. Shimla is the current capital of Himachal Pradesh and is an extremely popular holiday destination that attracts hordes of people from all over the world. We will stop for lunch near by shimla.

In the evening, we will reach Narkanda, which is a small town that turns into a skiing resort in winter and is also known for its maple, oak, holly, hazelnut, and pine forests. You spend the night at a hotel in Narkanda.

After breakfast, we begin our scenic drive towards the stunning Sangla Valley, passing through Sarahan and Rampur while enjoying picturesque mountain vistas along the way.

By afternoon, we arrive at Sangla Valley, one of the most beautiful valleys in Himachal, known for its lush landscapes, charming wooden houses, apple orchards, and the serene Baspa River.

The evening is free for you to stroll through the peaceful village lanes, interact with locals, or simply relax in the tranquil surroundings.
Spend the night in the enchanting ambience of Sangla Valley.

After breakfast, we drive towards Chitkul, the last inhabited village on the Indo-Tibet border and one of the most scenic high-altitude villages in India.

Spend your morning exploring the charming lanes of Chitkul, visiting the sacred Mathi Temple, walking up to the Chitkul Bridge, and enjoying the peaceful surroundings along the Baspa River banks.

For lunch, savour a delicious meal at the iconic “Hindustan Ka Akhri Dhaba”, a unique experience for every traveller visiting this remote paradise.

Post lunch, we continue towards Kalpa, a picturesque village known for its apple orchards, wooden houses, and deep spiritual roots. By evening, arrive in Kalpa and enjoy the majestic views of Mount Kailash and the surrounding Himalayan peaks, especially during sunset when the mountains glow in different hues.

This day marks the most important part of the Spiti Valley tour as we take the world-famous Hindustan - Tibet Highway, a mountainous stretch dubbed as one of the ‘most adventurous roads of the world’. As we begin journeying towards Spiti, we come across the Nako Lake in Pooh at a height of 12, 014 feet. It is surrounded by trees and a few Buddhist temples. Also nearby is a waterfall so milky white in its appearance, that is believed to be the abode of heavenly fairies.  

Our next destination is extremely interesting yet eerie. In Gue, a small village between Sumdo and Tabo, lies a 500-year old, perfectly naturally mummified body of a Tibetan monk. Enclosed in only a glass case is this naturally preserved body of the monk in a sitting meditation pose, with his fist around one leg and chin resting on a knee. The teeth, hair, and eyes are still intact along with the Gomthag, a Buddhist meditation belt, running from his neck to his knees helping to maintain the position. About 40 kms from Gue, lies Tabo, a small village on the arid, cold, desert-like terrain of Spiti, known for its thousand-year old Tabo Monastery. After exploring the local cuisines and getting a flavour of the laid-back lifestyle of the place, we’d call it a day. 

The day starts with a visit to one of the most important monasteries in the entire Tibetan Buddhist world.  A Spiti Valley trip is incomplete without a visit to the Tabo Monastery. Situated at a height of 10, 010 feet, it is one of the holiest and the second most important monastery in the entire Himalayan region. Built in 996 AD, this 1,025-year old monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Gompa,  popularly known as the ‘Ajanta of the Himalayas’, is also protected by the Archaeological Survey of India as a national treasure. True to its millennium-old traditions, culture, and glorious heritage of being an advanced learning centre, the monastery has set up a school for the young generation of the valley which promotes modern education.

 Next We will Visit Dhankar Village, Sitting at a height of 12,774 feet amidst a spectacular setting that overlooks the confluence of the Spiti and Pin rivers, the Dhankar Monastery is a vision. Originally built as a fort monastery, it is said to have housed 90 monks back in 1855. From here, one can easily trek to the Dhankar Lake that lies above the monastery. The tranquil blue water eludes a calm that makes it difficult to pull away from it. 

By evening,  we reach Kaza, which is the commercial capital of Spiti Valley and is situated along the Spiti River. You can go around to explore the local cafes, shops and boutiques in the evening and rest the night at our hotels.

Our first stop today is the Ki Monastery, which is the biggest monastery in Spiti Valley and is situated at a height of 13, 668 feet by the Spiti river. Ki Monastery is a religious training center for lamas and presently is the residence of about 250 monks. The monastery has a treasurable collection of Buddha images, books and ancient murals characteristic of monastic architecture. While in Spring, you see the ash-black arid mountains of Spiti surrounding the monastery, the accumulation of thick snow during winter makes it look like a snow castle. 

Our next stop brings us to Hikkim village, one of the highest permanent settlements in the world at a height of 14, 400 feet. An extremely strenuous road connects Hikkim to Kaza of Spiti, which is at a distance of 46 kms away and is the nearest town with access to proper roads. Hikkim village is the proud owner of the World’s Highest Post Office and was once also the World’s Highest Polling Station. You can send a letter from this prestigious post office to yourself to keep a mark of this achievement forever. Also, spend some time talking to the postmaster who has been here since the Post Office first started. 

From Hikkim we travel to Langza, another small village which is known for its gigantic Buddha statue which overlooks the stunning Spiti Valley. Langza is about 16 kms away from Kaza and to this day remains one of the offbeat unexplored regions of Spiti. The villagers living in perfect harmony with nature will make you want to stay back in this little hamlet. From Langza we move on to yet another place holding a world record - the Komic Village.  Komic is the World’s Highest Village at an altitude of a whopping 15, 027 feet. The Tangyud Monastery in Komic is another notable place of visit. Because it was built to be a fortified castle, it has huge slanted mud walls and battlements.

This is our last stop for the day and we head back to Kaza by evening.

After breakfast, you have a relaxed day to experience the authentic charm of Kaza at your own pace. You can take a leisurely walk through the surrounding local villages, observe the peaceful lifestyle, and interact with friendly locals to learn about their culture, daily routines, and traditions in the remote Spiti Valley.

Alternatively, you can unwind during your stay, soak in the mountain views, or explore the local markets of Kaza, which are known for traditional woollens, handmade souvenirs, prayer flags, and unique Tibetan artefacts.

This is also a great opportunity to try local cafes, taste delicious Tibetan food, and simply enjoy the slow, calming rhythm of life in Spiti. Overnight stay in Kaza.

After breakfast, we will begin our scenic drive towards Chandratal Lake, crossing the remote high-altitude village of Losar and the iconic Chicham Bridge. The journey continues through the spectacular Kunzum Pass, which serves as the gateway between Lahaul and Spiti, offering incredible panoramic views of snow-clad peaks and vast valleys.

Upon arrival at Chandratal Lake, take some time to relax and acclimatise. Situated at an altitude of around 14,000 ft, the weather here remains cold even during summer, so wearing warm layers is highly advisable. Spend time soaking in the mesmerising turquoise waters, dramatic landscapes, and the surreal sense of peace that surrounds this Himalayan gem.

Later, check in to your Chandratal Lake campsite, located approximately 2.5 km away from the lake. Enjoy a cosy evening under a starlit sky and experience the true essence of Himalayan camping.

After breakfast, we will begin our journey back towards Manali, driving through the rugged and dramatic landscapes of Spiti. En route, we will pass through remote regions such as Bataal, Chatru, and Gramphu, offering breathtaking views of towering mountains, glacial streams, and raw Himalayan wilderness.

We will then continue towards Atal Tunnel, the world’s longest high-altitude tunnel, which significantly reduces travel time and offers a truly memorable drive experience. By evening, we will reach Manali, where you can relax and unwind after a long day on the road.

After breakfast, around 8:00 AM, we will begin our drive back to Chandigarh. Enjoy the scenic journey as we descend from the mountains, passing through picturesque valleys and charming hill towns along the way.

By 6:00–8:00 PM, we will reach Chandigarh, marking the end of this unforgettable Spiti Valley journey filled with breathtaking landscapes, cultural experiences, and cherished memories.
