All about the Spiti Tour Luxury Experience 8 Days.

On the frontier land of India and Tibet, lies a trans-Himalayan slice of heaven known as Spiti Valley in the state of Himachal Pradesh. Described as “a world within a world” by none other than Rudyard Kipling, words fall short to express the incredible beauty of this place. The slate-black mountain ranges, the grey river meandering through the valley, and the sparsely distanced houses, Spiti has a timeless charm that transports you to another world. Aptly known as the “Valley of Monasteries”, Spiti has long been one of the most prominent sites of Buddhism in the world.

Spiti is home to some of the highest places in the world like Hikkim and Komic. The subarctic temperatures also makes it the perfect abode of endangered animals like the Snow Leopard protected under the Pin Valley National Park region. Being a Buddhist-centric region there are many beautiful and ancient monasteries like the Tabo Monastery, which is a millennium old. The stunning scenery of the place has been a shooting location of Bollywood films like Paap and Highway. Spiti is well connected to Shimla through the Hindustan-Tibet Highway, one of the ‘deadliest roads’ tagged by History Channel. It can also be reached from Manali crossing the famous Rohtang and Kunzum Passes but this route is only accessible for a short period owing to extreme snowfall.

In this thoughtfully curated Spiti Valley tour itinerary, you will be travelling via Shimla and visit these world-famous places that attract a forever-increasing group of travellers and explorers from every corner of the world. A visit to this “place where the Gods live” will truly be a heavenly experience.

    1. Day 1 Chandigarh - Shimla - Narkanda

      Distance travelled: 175 kms

      Time taken: 7-8 hours

This is the day our trip to Spiti Valley from Chandigarh Airport starts. From Chandigarh we reach Shimla, the favourite hill station of most Indians, formerly known as the summer capital of British-ruled India. Shimla is the current capital of Himachal Pradesh and is an extremely popular holiday destination that attracts hordes of people from all over the world. We stop to have lunch here and head on to Kufri, a resort hill station only 20 kms from Shimla. Kufri has a variety of things to offer in terms of sightseeing like the Himalayan Wildlife Zoo which hosts some rare Big Cat species, bears, rare antelopes and the beloved Himalayan Monal which used to be the state bird of Himachal. There is also the Kufri Fun  Campus which has several rides and pools and hosts the world’s highest go-karting track. Apart from these attractions, the general ambience of Kufri feels very peaceful with the beautiful Himalayas all around it.

After exploring Kufri we reach Narkanda, which is a small town that turns into a skiing resort in winter and is also known for its maple, oak, holly, hazelnut, and pine forests. You spend the night at a hotel in Narkanda.

    2. Day 2 Narkanda - Kalpa

      Distance travelled: 162 kms

      Time taken: 5-6 hours

On the second day we leave from Narkanda and head towards Kalpa, a small village at the foot of the great Kinnaur Kailash mountain. Kalpa is about 265 kms further from Shimla. It is famous for its rich apple orchards, pine-nut forests and a variety of Deodars known as the Chilgoza. Heavily influenced by both Hinduism and Buddhism, the village has many ancient temples dedicated to both these religions. This beautiful postcard-like village offers a stunning view of the snow-tipped peaks of the Kinnaur Kailash range. The revered Shivling Peak(monolithic pillar), which is said to appear a different colour depending on the time of the day, rises up to a height of 15, 700 feet and brings thousands of Hindu and Buddhist devotees from across the globe each year. Just a little more than a couple of kilometers away, at Kothi, is the Kothi Temple, dedicated to Chandika Devi. An elegant gold image of the goddess Chandika is enshrined at the altar. The temple is situated in a picturesque setting and is known for its distinct architectural style and splendid carvings.

    3. Day 3 Kalpa - Nako Lake - Gue Mummy - Tabo

      Distance covered: 150 kms

      Time taken: 7-8 hours

This day marks the most important part of the Spiti Valley tour as we take the world-famous Hindustan – Tibet Highway, a mountainous stretch dubbed as one of the ‘most adventurous roads of the world’. As we begin journeying towards Spiti, we come across the Nako Lake in Pooh at a height of 12, 014 feet. It is surrounded by trees and a few Buddhist temples. Also nearby is a waterfall so milky white in its appearance, that is believed to be the abode of heavenly fairies.

Our next destination is extremely interesting yet eerie. In Gue, a small village between Sumdo and Tabo, lies a 500-year old, perfectly naturally mummified body of a Tibetan monk. Enclosed in only a glass case is this naturally preserved body of the monk in a sitting meditation pose, with his fist around one leg and chin resting on a knee. The teeth, hair, and eyes are still intact along with the Gomthag, a Buddhist meditation belt, running from his neck to his knees helping to maintain the position. Learn more about the history of this legendary mummy when you visit Gue.

About 40 kms from Gue, lies Tabo, a small village on the arid, cold, desert-like terrain of Spiti, known for its thousand-year old Tabo Monastery. After exploring the local cuisines and getting a flavour of the laid-back lifestyle of the place, we’d call it a day.

    4. Day 4 Tabo - Tabo Monastery - Dhankar Monastery - Kaza

      Distance covered: 110 kms

      Time taken: 7 hours

The day starts with a visit to one of the most important monasteries in the entire Tibetan Buddhist world.  A Spiti Valley trip is incomplete without a visit to the Tabo Monastery. Situated at a height of 10, 010 feet, it is one of the holiest and the second most important monastery in the entire Himalayan region. Built in 996 AD, this 1,025-year old monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Gompa,  popularly known as the ‘Ajanta of the Himalayas’, is also protected by the Archaeological Survey of India as a national treasure. True to its millennium-old traditions, culture, and glorious heritage of being an advanced learning centre, the monastery has set up a school for the young generation of the valley which promotes modern education.

Next We will Visit Dhankar Village, Sitting at a height of 12,774 feet amidst a spectacular setting that overlooks the confluence of the Spiti and Pin rivers, the Dhankar Monastery is a vision. Originally built as a fort monastery, it is said to have housed 90 monks back in 1855. From here, one can easily trek to the Dhankar Lake that lies above the monastery. The tranquil blue water eludes a calm that makes it difficult to pull away from it.

By evening,  we reach Kaza, which is the commercial capital of Spiti Valley and is situated along the Spiti River. You can go around to explore the local cafes, shops and boutiques in the evening and rest the night at our hotels.

    5. Day 5 Kaza - Ki Monastery - Hikkim - Komik - Langza - Kaza

      Distance covered: 70 kms

      Time taken: 5 hours

Our first stop today is the Ki Monastery, which is the biggest monastery in Spiti Valley and is situated at a height of 13, 668 feet by the Spiti river. Ki Monastery is a religious training center for lamas and presently is the residence of about 250 monks. The monastery has a treasurable collection of Buddha images, books and ancient murals characteristic of monastic architecture. While in Spring, you see the ash-black arid mountains of Spiti surrounding the monastery, the accumulation of thick snow during winter makes it look like a snow castle.

Our next stop brings us to Hikkim village, one of the highest permanent settlements in the world at a height of 14, 400 feet. An extremely strenuous road connects Hikkim to Kaza of Spiti, which is at a distance of 46 kms away and is the nearest town with access to proper roads. Hikkim village is the proud owner of the World’s Highest Post Office and was once also the World’s Highest Polling Station. You can send a letter from this prestigious post office to yourself to keep a mark of this achievement forever. Also, spend some time talking to the postmaster who has been here since the Post Office first started.

From Hikkim we travel to Langza, another small village which is known for its gigantic Buddha statue which overlooks the stunning Spiti Valley. Langza is about 16 kms away from Kaza and to this day remains one of the offbeat unexplored regions of Spiti. The villagers living in perfect harmony with nature will make you want to stay back in this little hamlet. From Langza we move on to yet another place holding a world record – the Komic Village.  Komic is the World’s Highest Village at an altitude of a whopping 15, 027 feet. The Tangyud Monastery in Komic is another notable place of visit. Because it was built to be a fortified castle, it has huge slanted mud walls and battlements.

This is our last stop for the day and we head back to Kaza by evening.

    6. Day 6 Kaza - Losar - Kunzum Pass - Chandratal Lake

      Distance covered: 120 kms

      Time taken: 7 hours

After you arrive there take rest near the lake which is at an altitude of 14,000 ft so it will be cold there, wear warm clothes and enjoy the breath-taking views. Then we will be staying in Chandratal Lake Camps in the night which is 2.5 to 5 km away from  the lake.
