Overview
Chandratal, also known as Chandra Taal, is a high-altitude lake in Himachal Pradesh’s Lahaul and Spiti Valley region. The lake’s name directly translates to ‘Lake of the Moon,’ owing to its crescent form. It is the Chandra River’s source, located at an elevation of 4,300 meters.
On the banks of the Chandratal, there are huge meadows where gaddi shepherds graze their animals. These meadows are covered with hundreds of varieties of wildflowers in the springtime, attracting thousands of people.
The religious significance of Chandratal Lake is linked to the Pandava brothers’ final trek after defeating the Kauravas in the Mahabharatha battle of Kurukshetra. It is claimed that as the Pandavas began their journey to heaven after the great fight, one by one, they all died along the path. Only Yudhishthir survived, and he was rescued by God Indra near Chandratal’s location.
In current times, the gorgeous lake is frequently visited by the most daring adventurers. Because of its high altitude and proximity to the wider Himalayas, travelers only have a limited time to visit Chandratal (only summers June to October 1st Week). During that season, the wildflowers fully cover the meadows surrounding this incredibly blue-colored lake. This flowery carpet, set against the backdrop of panoramic mountains and a blue spot of the lake, creates a picture-perfect scene. Setting up camps in such a spot allows you to be a part of authentic Himalayan nature, which is rarely encountered in Himachal Pradesh’s major sites.
