Spiti Valley Tour 6 Days Via Manali

The best time to visit Spiti Valley is generally from April to October, when the weather is pleasant, roads are accessible, and the landscapes are at their most beautiful.

For this 6-day Spiti tour, the ideal travel window is June to the first week of October.
This is when you can also complete the full Spiti Circuit:
Chandigarh → Shimla → Kinnaur → Kaza (Spiti Valley) → Kunzum Pass → Atal Tunnel → Manali → Delhi

During this period:

• Kunzum Pass remains open and free of heavy snow
  
• Weather stays pleasantly cold
  
• Snow can still be seen around high-altitude regions
  
• Road conditions are suitable for travel

If you wish to experience a snow-covered, frozen Spiti, the best time is December to March, perfect for those who love extreme winters and want to witness Spiti’s subarctic beauty.

By late September to October, the valley begins to transform with warm golden autumn colors, making it an excellent time for photographers and nature lovers.

There are 2 routes to visit Spiti located in Himachal:  via Shimla and via Manali. 

The Shimla route, taking the Hindustan-Tibet highway, goes: Shimla–Narkanda–Rampur–Powari–Spillow–Khab Bridge–Nako–Chango–Sumdo–Tabo–Kaza. Spiti Valley starts after Sumdo. This route remains accessible all year. 

The Manali route goes: Manali–Atal Tunnel–Gramphu–Chhatru–Chota Dhara–Batal–Kunzum Pass–Losar–Kaza, and is only accessible between June-October. 

Starting from Delhi/Chandigarh, a minimum of 8-10 days is needed to explore the mystical Spiti Valley and its offerings. It takes about 3-5 days to reach and come back from Spiti depending on the route. So you can dedicate the remaining days to enjoy the striking and fierce beauty of nature in Spiti Valley.

Your clothing depends heavily on the season, as Spiti’s weather changes drastically throughout the year. However, there are a few essentials you must carry year-round:

All-Season Essentials

• Thermal inners
  
• Light fleece jacket
  
• Woollen or fleece socks, gloves, and a monkey cap/balaclava
  
• Comfortable, insulated shoes suitable for long journeys
  
• Hat/cap, sunglasses, and sun protection cream
  

Layering Is the Key

Spiti’s temperature fluctuates throughout the day, so carry clothes you can easily layer, add them when it gets cold and remove them during warmer hours.

Season-Wise Clothing Tips

• June to August: Light woolens and layering options are enough.
  
• March to June & September to November: Carry heavy woolens, warm hoodies, and thicker jackets.
  
• December to April (Winter): Pack very carefully—temperatures drop drastically. You will need:

Proper clothing ensures comfort and safety, helping you enjoy Spiti’s beautiful yet extreme weather conditions.

ATMs in Spiti Valley are very limited and often non-functional due to harsh weather, power issues, and low cash availability. While places like Kaza, Tabo, Sangla, and Kalpa do have ATMs, they frequently run out of cash or remain temporarily offline.

To avoid inconvenience, it is highly recommended to withdraw sufficient cash before entering Spiti. The best places to do so are: Shimla, Manali, Reckong Peo (which has 6–7 reliable ATMs)

Carrying enough cash ensures a smooth journey, as most homestays, small shops, and local cafés do not accept digital or card payments in remote areas.

Permits depend on your nationality and the route you’re taking.

For Foreign Nationals

Foreign travelers need a Protected Area Permit (PAP) to visit certain parts of Spiti Valley.
This permit can be obtained from: Shimla, Kalpa, Kaza

(Depending on the direction from which you’re entering.)

For Indian Nationals

Indian citizens do not require any special permits to visit Spiti Valley. A valid government ID such as Aadhar Card, Voter ID, or Passport is sufficient.

For good connectivity, there is BSNL, AIRTEL, JIO. Sometimes due to lack of electricity, the phone lines don’t work. 

Homestays are perfectly suited for the phrase ‘home away from home. Homestays are where you can stay with the local family and live with them, experience their culture and practices, share meals with them, help them with their regular activities.  

In Spiti Valley, Homestays are very primarily made up of mud. Mostly people eat vegetarian food,  meat is not accessible in this region. There are eco-friendly toilet facilities in the homes. There is bedding for you to keep you warm during the night. 

In simple words guests at the Homestays are  accommodated in the family house that will provide you with the basic but tasty food.  

It is strongly recommended to adopt and acclimatize yourself before indulging in any physical activities.
